Backburning Efforts to stop the Currowan (Morton) Fire - Feb 2020

The Currowan Bushfire of 2019-2020

The fire broke out at Currowan - a locality in the Eurobodalla Shire, on the South Coast of NSW - in late November 2019 and was out of control for over 10 weeks after merging with other fires and jumping containment lines.

Approximately 500,000 hectares were burnt, over 300 homes destroyed and many others damaged. It killed countless wild animals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and small creatures. The final extinguishing of the fire came only with heavy rain, in early February 2020.

Currowan is located close to the Monga National Park and also just north of the Shoebridge Bridle Pack Track - areas of immediate interest for Access for All (AFA, accessforall).

During the 10 weeks it travelled northwards towards Bundanoon - it was also known as the Morton Fire - where backburning efforts and follow up rains managed to halt further progress. Images (C) Peter Kneen
